Your Story Is Right Under Your Nose

Are you busy scrambling to figure out how much to share, what to say, and how to reach your prospects?

Well, all the stories you need are right here… right now.

They’re literally under your nose. Let me share a quick story with you as an example.

One of my clients is working with me to get clarity on her message.

She’s hyper-focused on sharing the “right” story so she can attract dream clients who will love her new offerings and enroll in them.

So, on a recent coaching call, we hopped on Zoom and exchanged some pleasantries.

And she shared that the past week had been off-the-charts stressful.

Her college-age, athletic son had suddenly become really sick and needed two emergency surgeries.

She had been traveling and told me the remarkable story of her flight back home to her family.

Serendipitously, she found herself seated next to a pastor’s wife who offered comfort and conversation.

Both women were super grateful for the encounter. She walked...

How I Made $18,000 on Clubhouse — and You Can, Too

Smitten.

It’s a word I use when I talk about my husband.

And Clubhouse.

I joined Clubhouse in January. I quickly fell in love with it. It’s audio-only so it’s perfectly in line with my style.

Maybe it’s because it’s easy—no on-camera video or long written posts.

Anyway, when I speak on Clubhouse, my delivery, style, and vibe attract people.

Many listen. Some hire me.

That’s right. I’ve generated đź’° $18,000 đź’°in revenue from Clubhouse, and you can, too.

Simply by knowing how to talk about yourself in a concise, helpful, and personable way so people want to connect with you.

Here’s the secret:

You don’t have to share all the details of your life and career. You just have to share the right ones at the right moment.

After finding my way around Clubhouse in those first few weeks, I quickly learned how to share my knowledge, wisdom,...

Nobody’s Talking at the Airport—and That’s a Problem

I flew from Texas to New Jersey a few days ago.

I saw really long, beautiful lines at the airports.

Lines to check bags.

Lines to get through security.

Lines to buy food.

Certainly, a lovely sight as we emerge from the Pandemic.

Still, one thing really frightened me.

Even with the big crowds, the noise levels were incredibly low.

There wasn’t much chatter.

Or small talk.

Everyone was keeping to themselves.

Everyone was plugged into technology with earbuds that kept them closed off from the real-life experience of being out with other human beings.

And it’s not just at the airport.

It’s everywhere…the store, restaurants, the gym.

Our faces are in our phones.

Our brains are distracted and somewhere else.

Our earbuds turn us inward and keep us stuck in our own heads. In...

Your Most Valuable Piece of Content Isn't What You Think

If this wacky Pandemic has revealed one thing about entrepreneurs, it’s this:

Most people don’t feel comfortable talking about themselves online.

Even those with exceptional talents and experience.

They shrink back from sharing their stories.

They say too much…or the wrong things..so prospects click somewhere else.

They “kind of” think they have a story that’s worthy of sharing.

Still, deep down inside they’ve convinced themselves otherwise.

These are the common themes I’ve been seeing and hearing online and with clients since last March when the health crisis hit.

It’s especially rampant on Clubhouse.

People are messaging me about their deep fears around what to say when introducing themselves and how to say it.

Then I get the follow-up DM:

  • I need...

7 Heartfelt Lessons from Brooklyn on International Women's Day 2021

I don’t need International Women’s Day (#IWD2021) to recall one of the women who has had a profound impact on my life.

She passed away in 1994, yet to this day, I talk about and think about her. Every. Single. Day.

Her name was Nettie Freeman. My sisters and I called her "Mama." She was our maternal grandmother.

Mama was born in 1899 in Brooklyn, New York. She was married for 63 years (to the same man), had three children and nine grandchildren. She lived to see 12 of her 21 great-grandchildren. She died at the age of 95.

How would Mama, who had a high school diploma and never worked outside the home, be an inspiration for International Women’s Day?

  • Mama had never been on an airplane.
  • She never lived anywhere except New York, and a short time in New Jersey.
  • So what could Mama have taught me about business and my career in the 31...

How to Captivate Audiences with Heartfelt Stories

He had the stories in his heart and his head.

But David couldn’t get them out on paper.

No, it wasn’t a sales presentation or media coaching.

David was an accomplished project manager and engineer who was referred to me by a mutual business acquaintance.

He had a personal communication project that was new to me.

Look, I had ghostwritten nearly 1,000 posts, articles, bios, speeches, editorials and messages during my 35  years in the news and communication industry.

But never one like this.

David needed a Father of the Bride speech for his daughter Melissa’s rehearsal dinner.

This was big; 150 people at the dinner and 500 for the wedding the next day. David knew some of the guests intimately; the others he had never met.

People would be watching.

And judging.

It could be a tough crowd.

And David—whom...

Stop Ruining Your Introduction

Mesmerizing.

When I heard it, I was absolutely floored.

It’s a word people don’t just throw around…like awesome. Or cool.

A client who had just finished the last round of Story Magnets confided in me on our final private coaching call that she finds me mesmerizing.

Others in the group had lots of accolades…and, more important…fast results with their new 30-second story and the longer version of their story.
But mesmerizing?

OK, I'll admit, I was ringing the bell over here!

And I have to tell you, I couldn’t believe she was talking about me.

I reflected back on our 5 weeks together in Story Magnets and thought:
All I was doing was “my job.”

And in doing my job and “just being me,”...

A News Reporter Dishes on Why Your Pitches Are Being Ignored—and How to Fix Them

Hundreds of people over the years have asked me why reporters and podcasters are so dang hard to reach.

Why are they grumpy, uninterested and non-responsive?

[FREE VIDEO TRAINING: HOW TO SCORE INTERVIEWS WITH PODCASTERS + REPORTERS. CLICK TO DOWNLOAD THE RECORDING NOW!]

Here’s the secret:

Ninety-five percent of the pitches and “great story ideas” that are sent are irrelevant. They aren't newsworthy. They aren't valuable and “worthy” of an audience’s attention and interest.

It's that simple.

I was a radio news reporter and on-air anchor. I received thousands of pitches during my 10-year career in newsrooms in New Jersey and New York.

I decided what was newsworthy. I was the gatekeeper.

My audience depended on my sound judgement to share important, compelling and interesting stories that affected them.  The same is true today with reporters—and podcasters. They want subject matter experts—people like YOU!
