Budgets and lawmakers- has your industry, business or nonprofit gotten a big boost or gotten a big red line from your Governor or legislature? Write a letter to the editor or op-ed article. If you received a nice allocation, draft a press release announcing the funds and how they will be used.

  Health and safety stories- If you are in a health-related field, write press releases and pitch your organization as experts in pool and water safety, camps for kids, fireworks and eye safety (July 4 weekend), sports injuries, barbecue safety, pets and hot weather, the elderly and hot weather, or safe camping tips. June health observances include June 4 is National Cancer Survivors Day and June 12-18 is National Men’s Health Week.

   Fall and Autumn stories- if you work with magazines, their lead time is typically 2-3 months, or more. Start thinking about pitches for magazines. Check those editorial calendars on line and see what lies ahead.

Human interest stories- these tend to get the attention of editors during the summer when the newsroom is slow. If you have an undated or “evergreen” story, this could be your time to shine! Consider awards, anniversaries and tip sheets with expert advice from your business or nonprofit.
